Straight Outta Compton
Tonight, I saw the most important film of the year! (YES. I really mean that.) Straight Outta Compton reminds us of what we were fighting for in the late eighties and early nineties, our First and Fourth Amendment rights. We need to be called out on how easily we’ve given ourselves to ignorance and cowardice! We forgot about the bravery and heroism of NWA. Yes, heroism, because they stood up for all people in reminding the government, “You can’t treat people like that and not expect them to rise up!” “What you’re doing is illegal!” Sadly, it is still (rogue elements within that are fast becoming the majority of) the US Government vs. The People. Sadly, COINTELPRO has never ended, the press has sold out too, and music artists will never be allowed to change the world the way NWA did again.
The film is perfect in its execution and features the star turn of Jason Mitchell, who plays Eazy-E. Total. Oscar. Performance. Spot on work that I hope Hollywood takes note of! This is by far F. Gary Gray’s best film. You could tell his whole heart was in it. I was BLOWN AWAY by the American Graffiti reference. (I wonder how many people will get that.) Classic, Mr. Gray. Classic.
One can’t miss how great O’Shea Jackson Jr. is at playing his father (Ice Cube); but I thought for sure Corey Hawkins (playing Dr. Dre) was Denzel Washington’s son! LOL (You’ll see.) Thanks to my girl, Ny of Jaded Culture I was invited to the press screening; but I can’t wait to PAY TO SEE THIS MOVIE. It’s more than worth it.
